Today the SA SDCD R, Kello Harsama accompanied by Dr. Johnson Waithaka, Director Crops, officiated at the Kenya Seed Co 2019 Annual Scientific Field Day showcasing top quality climate-resilient varieties and innovations to enhance food security and nutrition. He noted that Kenya Seed as a company plays an important role in the government’s quest to achieve the Big 4 agenda through research and development of superior varieties. He added that in view of adverse climate change more effort is required to promote the adoption of early maturing and drought-tolerant varieties. In his off the cuff remarks he used a play on the wrestling “do not try this at home” to urge farmers to take the innovations home and try them.
The MD Kenya Seed said the company is facing challenges getting adequate land due to massive sub-division of large farms into small units. He requested a halt to further sub-division of ADC farms and urged private large scale farmers to maintain their acreage to guarantee future seed production.
