Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Mr. Willy Bett has announced a Sh 215 million drought insurance payout to 12,064 vulnerable pastoral households in the arid and semi-arid (ASAL) Counties of Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Tana River, Turkana and Wajir.
The CS said the payout will be coordinated by the Government’s Kenya Livestock Insurance Program (KLIP) in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and a consortium of 7 insurance companies – APA, UAP, CIC, AMACO, Kenya Orient, Jubilee and Heritage.
The payments to the drought-stricken pastoralists will be made before the end of February 2017. A similar payout of Sh. 3.5 million was made out in August 2016.
During the announcement of the payout, Bett was flanked by the ILRI Director-General Mr. Jimmy Smith and the Chief Executive Officer of APA Ashok Shah who represented the Consortium of the 7 insurance companies.
