On 14th February, 2020, the CAS Ministry of Agriculture Ms. Anne Nyaga held a briefing session at FAO Headquarters Rome, with the FAO Locust team led by Mr. Keith Cressman, the Senior Locust Forcasting Officer Plant Production and Protection Division. The Subject of discussion was the severe desert locust invasion in Kenya and the ongoing control and management operations. She noted that the intensity of the locust invasion in Kenya is unpresidented. The presence of the pest in the country when the long rains cropping season is just around the corner is a real threat to national food security. The FAO team informed that the invasion has been worsened by climate change that triggered unexpected cyclons and wet weather which was a favourable conditions for the pest rapid multiplication and resultant upsurge. There is need for concerted efforts from the Government, FAO, development partners and stakeholders to fight the locusts as well as build the needed capacity to strengthen and expand structures for surveillance, control and continuous management. The CAS thanked FAO for providing pesticide support and building capacity of the control team in Kenya. Mr. Cressman said that FAO will continue to working with Kenya Government and partners to bring the pest under control
