National Crop Conditions Bulletin for January 2019

Late onset of the short rains, erratic rains and early cessation adversely affected crop production in most parts of the country during the season. Low acreage was established and below average yields are expected in most parts of the country. Land preparation for the Long Rains has commenced and is expected to continue into February in most parts of the North rift. Harvesting of the short rains beans is ongoing in Nakuru, Kericho and parts of lower and upper Eastern. Maize harvesting is complete in Western, Lower Nyanza and was at 30% in Upper Nyanza which comprises Kisii and Nyamira. Market prices for maize and wheat recorded an increase but bean prices recorded a drop for rosecoco and canadian wonder varieties
