The CAS Linah Chebii Kilimo today at Intercontinental Hotel, officially opened a one day national validation of livestock bill. The bill spells out the objectives, roles of the County Governments, the development of livestock sector and establishment of livestock sector agencies and training institutions. In her remarks, Kilimo said that the development of the livestock bill which was done through a countrywide stakeholder and expert consultations culminated into today’s meeting to ascertain whether the bill fits the livestock sector and the stakeholders.The bill incorporates the legal notices that established livestock state corporations like Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institution, Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre and the Kenya Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Council. Chebii was accompanied by the PS SDL Harry Kimutai,Director Julius Kiptarus of Livestock Production and Dr.Christopher Wanga, Director Policy, among other senior officials from the state department.

Principal Secretary SDL, Harry Kimtai, today officially opened Hides, Skins and Leather development stakeholders meeting held at Galian Hotel in Machakos. PS Harry, in his remarks said that the hides and skins of an animal be taken care of while the animal is alive and this can be done by observing good husbandry through proper deiting and cleansing of the animal, He said that in cleansing of animal, underdosing contributes more to ticks becoming resistant to most of the acaricides, thereby leading to poor hide substance and skins. PS advised all stakeholders present in the meeting to take heed of using the meat inspectors for both meat inspection and hides and skins improvement. He added that the entire quality of hides and skins would always depend on animal nutrition, control of ecto-parasitic diseases, adoption of starndadised flaying procedures and proper storage techniques. He was accompanied by steam of senior officers SDL among them, Dr Christopher Wanga.

The CS Hon Peter Munya todat at Kilimo House flagged off 26 vehicles to support the implementation of the Kenya climate smart Agriculture project (KCSAP) activites in the counties.

KSCAP is a Government of Kenya project supported by the world bank its development objective is to increase Agricultural production and enhance resilience/coping mechanism to climate change risk in the targeted smallholder and pastoral communities.

On arrival this afternoon he immediately set out to visit one of the kill zones at Nakwamoru Sirata lolorikan in Samburu East where he saw first-hand the successful results of spraying with Fenthrotion. The area was sprayed on 18/1/2020, four days ago. The PS is accompanied by a team from FAO.

The support by WIPO especially in the area of geographical indication (GI) will help Kenya grow it’s Agri economy. GI, a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or reputation due to that origin, can hugely help Kenya build global brands.

PS Harry Kimtai launched a consultative process on Livestock Bill with the County executive committee members responsible for Livestock.

PS Harry Kimtai today at Sarova Panafric Hotel, Nairobi,officially launched a consultative process on Livestock Bill with the County executive committee members responsible for Livestock. The Bill will ensure that Kenyan Livestock and Livestock products remain globally competitive and sustainable to enhance the sector’s contributions to the County’s economy. The Bill has brought together CECs from 48 Counties to discuss and consult in coming up with a final document. “We have mobilized resources essential to deliver on this process in time and therefore we invite you to make your contributions freely to enable us produce a workable Bill for further processing by parliament” the PS told the members at the workshop. During the meeting, PS Kimtai was accompanied by CEC Mary Nzomo and Chair coordinator for Agriculture in Kenya, Livestock representatives and senior officers from SDL, among others
