Governors HE Anyang Nyongo of Kisumu and HE Sang of Kericho and area MP Hon Koyoo also addressed the farmers. The CS asked management to pay farmers promptly. The ministry is to pay the farmers arrears after vetting. He warned against underage cane harvesting by any factory. The CS carried the farmers Memorandum to look at and consider with the task force.

Farmers will be paid within 10 days of delivery of their maize to NCPB & other authorised buying centres, CS Mwangi Kiunjuri announced today. He also warned that only bonafide farmers will be paid. He said both levels of Government and NCPB will collaborate in establishing aggregating centres where farmers will deliver their maize.”This will ensure farmers do not travel long distances to deliver their maize” he said. The CS is on a 2-day tour of NCPB Silos in U/Gishu, T/Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega & Kisumu counties to ascertain the quality of maize currently being stored by NCPB.

Water and Irrigation PS Prof Segor Launched the EABL sorghum expansion strategy paper at the Nairobi university towers today. Key highlights 1. Ministry to upscale promotion of sorghum to support blending for nutrition as well as reducing pressure on maize. 2 Ministry to consider adoption of EABL private sector farmers contracting model. 3 Ministry to support data collection and sharing, which was cited by stakeholders as one of the major challenges faced by private sector when promoting certain enterprises. 4 There is need for resolving the issue of extension services. EABL spend 70% of their work and budget supporting farmers on extension issues. The brewers have concluded that Kenyan farmers can’t succeed well supported extension system. 5 There is enough job for the youths in sorghum value chain. Awareness creation is needed in this regard.

CS Mwangi Kiunjuri launched a 15-man Sugar Task Force

CS Mwangi Kiunjuri today launched a 15-man Sugar Task Force which will look into the sugar sector and recommend way forward in addressing the problems ailing the industry. The team which includes Governors Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Okoth Obado (Migori) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega) have 40 days to complete the task. It will be co-chaired by CS Kiunjuri & Governor Oparanya.

October 2018 Crop Conditions Bulletin

In parts of  Western and Nyanza , poor distribution of the short rains resulted in crop stress and the areas are under watch. Conditions are expected to improve especially with the forecasted enhanced rainfall in the month of November. Overall a reduction in average prices was observed in the markets for maize and beans, however wheat prices recorded an increase. In the northern rift,areas around Mt Elgon harvesting of the long rains season crop is ongoing. In other parts of the country the onset of the short rains has delayed  and land preparation is still ongoing with minimal dry planting especially upper and lower eastern,central. Read more here
